Windows to Speak Inuktitut

Microsoft is developing a language interface pack in Inuktitut which will be available as a free download to run its Windows XP system. In Nunavut, Canada's Arctic territory, about 80 percent of the population is Inuit. About seven out of ten of those 20,000 Inuit speak Inuktitut as their first language.

Canadian Press reports that the developers are first having to identify which computer terms are already in general usage in Inuktitut, and then identify words for a host of computing terms such as "file format" and "upload." In some cases the Microsoft project, which is being run out of the Pirurvik Centre in Iqaluit, will have to create entirely new words. The language interface will take about a year to develop.

The project is significant in an area that is determined to maintain its culture and language. It will help maintain and encourage Inuktitut language skills at work, and even more importantly in the schools.
